YouTube Title Formula: How to Write Titles That Attract Buyers

A good YouTube title formula does two jobs. After the idea, your title is the second biggest factor in getting views, and thumbnail, title and the first five seconds of the video all have to match. For a business channel there is a third job: your title is a client filter, not just a headline. Fewer, qualified views can bring in more paying clients than lots of broad ones.

This guide shows how to write a killer YouTube title step by step, and how to title your YouTube videos for the audience you actually want.

Decide the Goal Before You Write the Title

  • Reach titles use universal words everyone knows. Jargon or local terms can lose viewers. Example: “Don't waste your money on the new iPhone”.
  • Qualified titles are for the right buyers, even if there are fewer of them. Jargon is fine when it filters for the audience you want. Example: “How to build a business that runs itself”.

The 9-Step YouTube Title Formula

Improve one step at a time, starting from a basic topic plus promise.

  1. Basic: How to earn $10,000 a month
  2. Actionable: Do this to earn $10,000 a month
  3. Time frame: add a year or period so it feels relevant
  4. Urgency: a word like “fast”
  5. Steps: “in four simple steps” sells the idea that it is easy
  6. Named framework: coin a name for your method, like the “1% rule”, for credibility
  7. First person: “How I made $10,000 a month” is your experience, not an opinion
  8. Curiosity gap: a teaser that withholds the answer, like “in three months: this is what happened”
  9. Contradiction: a story, a superlative and a twist, like “I found the cheapest option on the market, but nobody will buy it”

Two-Part and Three-Part YouTube Video Titles

Write both for every idea and keep the one that reads cleanest.

  • Two-part: [Short claim]: [second part]. Example: “Stop paying 40% tax: the remote worker's guide”. Watch out for a second part that only repeats the first.
  • Three-part: [Result] in [time]: [method] ([bonus]). Example: “$10K a month in 90 days: the SMMA framework (step by step)”. Watch out for clutter and titles that get cut off.

How to Title Your YouTube Videos for Buyers

  1. Problem qualification: lead with the solution to a problem you can solve for people who would pay you.
  2. Search intent: use the exact phrases your ideal clients would type. YouTube search suggestions and TubeBuddy help here.
  3. Investment indicator: add signals of existing spend, like dollar amounts, advanced tools, team size, revenue milestones or professional services.

Then check the comments on your recent videos. Are these the people you want to sell to? And make sure your call to action matches the audience the title attracts: a free guide attracts people with small budgets, a booking link attracts buyers.

YouTube Title Best Practices

  • Length: keep it understood in one read, and around 60 characters or fewer so it does not get cut off.
  • Format: use title case. All caps makes every letter the same height and slows reading.
  • With the thumbnail: add something the thumbnail does not say, instead of repeating its text.
  • Keywords: write for people first. In search-led niches, put the main keyword in the first half of the title.
  • Honesty: take a bold angle, as long as the video delivers on it.
  • Volume: write at least ten titles, then ask “would I click this?”

A Warning About Click-Through Rate

Click-through rate moves with reach. The more viral a video goes, the lower its click-through rate tends to fall, because it reaches broader audiences who are less likely to click. Compare it with similar videos and your last few uploads, and use views as the main check.

After You Publish

Leave a title that is working alone. If a video lands far below your expectation, change one thing at a time so you know what caused the result. Carry the curiosity into your chapters too, by wording them as questions instead of answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a YouTube title be?

Aim for around 60 characters or fewer, in the fewest words that stay interesting, so it is not cut off in the feed.

Should I put keywords in my YouTube title?

Write for people first. In search-led niches, put the main keyword in the first half of the title, but do not trade clarity for an SEO score.

How do I write a title that attracts buyers instead of browsers?

Lead with a problem you solve for people who would pay you, use the phrases your ideal clients search, and add signals of existing spend such as dollar amounts or team size.
